Six adult stutterers and age-matched nonstutterers produced 15 randomly presented syllable trains of differing stress patterns. Each stimulus train consisted of six repetitions of [pa]. Stress patterns were equistressed [[vertical_line_above]pa[vertical_line_above]pa[vertical_line_above]pa[vertical_line_above]pa[vertical_line_above]pa[vertical_line_above]pa], bistressed [[vertical_line_above]papa[vertical_line_above]papa[vertical_line_above]papa] and tristressed [[vertical_line_above]papapa[vertical_line_above]papapa]. Lip closure for [p] was transduced via lower lip strain gauge. Durations between lip closures were measured from the recorded waveforms. In the equistressed condition, nonstutterers produced syllables of equal duration. Stutterers produced significantly longer first syllables, indicative of slower speech initiation even for these fluently spoken utterances. In the bistress condition, both stutterers and nonstutterers produced longer stressed than unstressed syllables; however, the stutterers produced significantly longer syllables overall. In the tristressed condition, stutterers again produced patterns similar in shape but longer in duration when compared to the nonstutterers' productions. Results suggest that the fluent productions of stress patterns by stutterers differ from normal in their overall rate and in time of utterance initiation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
