A recent article in JASA described Russian formant frequency patterns in VCV utterances. Based on a stepwise multiple regression analysis of the data, that article showed the influence of articulatory predictors on each of four measurement points within the VCV test words. The analysis was limited to a separate consideration of each measurement point and the relative influence of the various articulatory parameters on the formant frequency at that point. The present paper presents a more comprehensive, more theoretically oriented analysis of the data. Using LISREL, a statistical package for the analysis of linear structural relations, it was possible to study the interactions of the measured variables and the effects of the articulatory parameters on these measured variables in one pass. The results of this analysis should be more interesting from a theoretical point of view. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
