Solutions containing ATP and human thrombosthenin (blood platelet actomyosin), exhibit vigorous and oscillatory streaming in glass microcapillaries. The duration of the phenomenon can be lengthened upon the addition of a regenerative system. Streaming is ascribed to mechanochemical energy transduction involving the breakdown of ATP by platelet actomyosin. Platelet shape change and aggregation, and clot contraction are suggested to be related to streaming phenomena in vivo. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
