In experiments on anesthetized dogs the disappearance of lactic acid in the lungs was investigated. While in chloralose anesthesia a removal of lactic acid by the lungs was significant, in urethane anesthesia this could not be shown. In chloralose anesthesia after bleeding the disappearance of lactic acid amounts to 7,2±2,0 mg./min. · 100 g. lung tissue. The fate of lactic acid in the lungs remains unknown. If one supposes, that it is metabolized to CO and water, under our experimental conditions the oxygenconsumption of the lungs may be estimated as being 10-12% of the total oxygen uptake.
