The life cycle of a dermatitis-producing schistosome from Malaya is described. Trichobilharzia breris n. sp. develops in the snail Lymnaea rubiginosa, and in domestic ducks (experimentally). Some development takes place in the lungs of white mice for about 5 days, when the schistosomulae disappear. In the snail, mother sporocysts develop in the heart and veins; daughter sporocysts appear as soon as 7 days after miracidial penetration: cercariae are released beginning 17 days after exposure. In ducklings, eggs of T. breris may be found as early as 11 days after exposure to cercariae. All stages of the life cycle except adult females are described and illustrated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
