Abstrakt: Accurate determination of membrane permeability (P) is important in the overall design of separatory devices. In this study, two mathematical models which permit computation of P are considered: these are the extended Graetz solution and the simple overall (tumped parameter) mass transfer coefficient model. Permeabilities of several commercially available hollow fibres are compared for markers in the representative molecular weight range 58 to 17 000 Daltons. The results indicate that the lumped parameter model overpredicts P, although use of a simple geometric correction factor significantly reduces this error. Membrane hydraulic permeability was also determined, using a static and a flowing perfusate system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
