Fatigue crack propagation rates in an A.P.I. 5L Grade steel were investigated by means of constant deflection amplitude bending fatigue tests at 640 c.p.m. on single edge notched specimens at - 50, - 10, 20 and 70°C in argon. The data were evaluated in terms of the crack propagation rate ( da/dN) as a function of the stress intensity range (Δ/K), according to da/dN = ΔK . It was found that dynamic strain aging has a major influence on fatigue crack propagation, resulting in a maximum of the crack propagation rate at room temperature. Similarly, the cyclic plastic zone size is a maximum at room temperature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
