This paper reviews the role of metallurgists in some of the early semiconductor research and cites key metallurgical contributions to semiconductor technology. The extension of the program in semiconductor metallurgy to the broader field of electronic materials is briefly reviewed. Finally, attention is called to the significant impact on metallurgical sicence of developments which had been initiated in studies of semiconductors and electronic materials. This talk had been presented with no intention of publication. I have, however, responded to several requests to publish the early history. The portion of the talk describing current work on electronic materials has been drastically shortened. Otherwise, the text follows the main outline of the talk. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
