Abstrakt: A study of the relative interaction abilities of various pyrimidine nucleosides and 5-halo pyrimidine nucleosides with serotonin was carried out using the NMR technique. The results show that these abilities are enhanced when the electron-deficient character of the base rings is increased by introducing a 5-halogen atom, i.e., the electron affinity differences of the base rings in a series of pyrimidine nucleosides play an important role in determining their relative interaction abilities with a given donor. The biophysical implications of the stronger interaction of 5-halo nucleosides, compared with natural pyrimidine nucleosides are discussed in the light of their radiosensitization effect on the DNA molecule and the intensity of charge transfer in stacked aggregates on irradiation.
