Abstrakt: The ultrastructural organization of Pieris epidermis during the last larval and early pupal instars is described. Two cell types can be distinguished: dark cells containing xanthommatin granules and clear cells containing potassium urate granules. All cells undergo analogous changes during the period studied i.e. a synthetic phase followed by a lytic phase. At the same time, the nucleoli undergo four successive morphological changes closely related to the pigment cycle. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
