Abstrakt: In this paper the influence of a lanthanide, praseodymium, on insulin concentration in portal vein blood is described. In short-time experiments insulin concentration was found increased, if praseodymium was given 60 min before the experiment. An additional glucose load did not further increase serum insulin. 48 h after application of praseodymium, there is no difference in serum insulin concentration between pretreated and control animals. In contrast to control animals, however, praseodymium treated rats did not respond with an increase of serum insulin concentration if a stimulation of insulin secretion was provoked by glucose or glucagon. Whether or not the observed effects are due to an interaction of the lanthanides with Ca cannot be decided from the existing results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
