Abstrakt: Polyvinylpyridine-N-oxide (PVNO) proved to be a RE stimulant, when examined by means of the intravascular removal rate of colloidal carbon. The phagocytic activity of liver and spleen was significantly enhanced 24 and 48 hours after one single intravenous injection of PVNO or until day 10 after 9 cumulative injections, given intraperitoneally. A large increase of the phagocytic activity of many macrophages was caused by a single injection of PVNO. However, there was no proliferation of RE elements, as is the case with some other RE stimulants such, as zymosan and estrogens. The question of a causal connection between the phagocytic stimulation and the anti-silicogenic effect of PVNO is discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
