Abstrakt: 1. Cigarettes, containing 5-20 mg. of atropine sulphate and made of tobacco with a low content of nicotine, were smoked. 2. The smoke was collected with a Cottrell filter and dissolved in chloroform. 3. The atropine was purified by partition chromatography and estimated spectrophotometrically. 4. When cigarettes, containing 0,2 g. of tobacco and 5-20 mg. of atropine sulphate, were smoked, an average of 25% of the atropine was found in the smoke. 5. From asthma cigarettes that were made of stramonium leaves, a smaller amount of atropine, percentage wise, passed over in the smoke; this may be explained by the low content of alkaloids in the leaves. 6. Deep inhalations gave a retention in the lungs of approximately 80% of the atropine content in the smoke. When the cigarettes were smoked 'superficially' the retention was only about 20%.
