Data are presented showing the beneficial effect of green manure crops of soybeans and sorghum upon the yield of potatoes on two soil types. Fresh organic matter was found to be approximately three times as effective in increasing yield as was residual organic matter. It is shown that green manure crops add plant nutrients to the soil in amounts approximately equivalent to 2,000 pounds on each acre of a 7-2-5 fertilizer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
