A cytomegalovirus strain was recovered from the submaxillary glands of healthy full grown ground squirrels ( Citellus citellus). Homologous kidney epithelium monolayers exhibited cytomegalo-type cytopathic changes 4 days after inoculation with infected salivary gland material. The isolate was unique among cytomegaloviruses in its ability to grow in epithelial cell cultures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
