Production and development of antibodies in rabbits, chickens, baby and adult mice and hamsters inoculated with three polyoma virus variants, differing in their oncogenicity, was studied by neutralization, HI or cross absorption tests. The results indicate that the three variants are related antigenically and that the highly oncogenic CH virus possesses an additional antigenic component. Rabbits and chickens responded better to the CH variant than to the CH or CH variants. The anti CH sera contained high titers of antibodies against the three variants, while the CH or CH viruses did not elicit heterologous antibodies. Mice and hamsters responded to the same extent to all the three variants inoculated; their antisera contained higher NT antibody titers against the CH or CH viruses than against the C-H+ virus. The CH virus elicited HI antibodies, the titer of which was two to four times higher than that elicited by other variants. An attempt was made to correlate the serological responses to the three variants of polyoma virus with their oncogenicity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
