An investigation of the porous structure of refractories for steel-teeming ladle fused and sintered periclase base slide gates confirmed the presence of primarily fine voids in the samples. The void space of the raw material is determined primarily by the forming process of the part and by the form of the finely pulverized component and the cementing binder. Calcining of the raw materials is accompanied by an increase in the size and volume of the voids as the result of burning off of the binder. High temperature firing leads to some redistribution of the voids with a decrease in their volume as the result of coalescence of the finely pulverized component and its scorching to the surface of the coarse grains. The addition of BO, which intensifies sintering of the finely pulverized component but has no special influence on the mutual location of the grains in the volume of the sample, leads to a marked increase in the number of coarse voids into which penetration of the molten steel is possible.
