The activation analysis of aluminosilicate materials for their AlO and SiO concentrations and a selective analysis for the concentration of AlO can be used with confidence for production control in the refractory industry. Ampoules of neutron sources with an activity of ∼1·10-3·10 neutrons/sec were used. These sources require the minimum amount of safety precautions to ensure biological protection. The rapidity of the activation analysis and the fact that the samples are more representative than those in the quantitative chemical methods makes it possible to recommend this method primarily for monitoring the quality of the raw material in the mines.
