Abstrakt: When the oxides MgO and MnO are added to the composition of corundum batches the bending strength and microhardness increase and the microbrittleness decreases. The best composition is that for batch No. 5 which contains 2% MnO and MgO. Compared with sintered corundum without this additive, its microhardness is about 15% greater, σ and the ductility or resistance S to indentation twice as high, and the brittleness index about 3.5 times lower. For a rapid comparative assessment of the strength of materials with a fine-grained structure measurements of the microhardness can successfully replace bending strength σ determination provided the grain size is commensurate with the size of the indentation of a diamond pyramid.
