Abstrakt: Toggle presses used to fabricate firebrick are not used with the full certified pressing force because an increase in this force leads to overpress cracking in the green brick, and these cracks are the main obstacle in improving the quality of the refractories by boosting the fabrication pressure. The PK-630 presses compared with the SM-143 presses have serious drawbacks: the comparatively low compression time for the body and the absence of holding at maximum force. This apparently should be explained by the fact that in identical pressing conditions the articles made on the PK-630 press have a lower apparent density since the overpressing cracks appear in the green bricks at lower specific pressure. From the industrial point of view the kinematics of the SM-143 press are better than those of the PK-630 press. Elimination of causes of a technical and mechanical nature leading to cracking in the green brick would increase the use of the fabrication force and improve the quality of goods pressed on toggle presses without increasing their power.
