Abstrakt: The article discusses the depiction of a folded "mozzetta," a cape used by the clergy, in the portrait busts of Italian Baroque sculptor Gian Lorenzo Bernini. The author explores the symbolism of the "mozzetta," focusing on its red colour, its representation of the authority of cardinals and the pope, and its connection to the swaddling cloth and shroud of Jesus Christ. The author discusses the depiction of folded "mozzette" in paintings by Raphael, Rogier van der Weyden, and Titian and describes Bernini's use of the motif for portraits including those of Cardinal Alessandro Damasceni Peretti Montalto and Scipione Borghese. The author suggests that Bernini depicted the folded "mozzetta" to represent the authority of its wearer.
