With a methane oxidizing strain of Methanomonas margaritae requirement of copper sulfate for the multiplication of cells was observed. When the organisms were cultured in a medium containing both copper and methane, cell growth was parallel to the consumption of copper sulfate in the medium. Also, using ultrathin sections, intracellular structure of the strain was investigated. When organisms were cultured in the medium, organella-like extra large cysts with double membrane and/or multilayered peripheral membrane were observed within the cell. However, only vesicles were shown in those organisms grown in copper sulfate-deficient media. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
