Abstrakt: The mineral content and mechanical strength of the humeri were measured in pair-fed rats fed diets containing 0.05%, 0.2% and 0.5% sodium acetazolamide for 20 days. At all levels employed no significant effect of acetazolamide was seen on the growth, ash content or ash composition of long bones. However, acetazolamide-feeding tended to decrease the breaking strength of humeri. At the level of 0.5% acetazolamide in the diet, this decrease was significant. These findings suggest that caution should be exercised in the use of acetazolamide to control disuse osteoporosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
