The sciatic nerve was severed and resected bilaterally in 160 rats. The animals were divided into 2 groups, young (100 g) and old (300 g) ones. Each group was then divided into 4 groups of 20 animals each, which stayed either untreated or were treated with local injection of normal saline into the nerve or received either systemic or local treatment with Triamcinolon. Half of the animals were sacrificed after 5 weeks, the other after 9 weeks. Neuromas resulted in all cases, but in the group treated locally with Triamcinolon the filiform outgrowth of the club-shaped neuroma did not take place as in all other groups. We believe that this outgrowth rather than the club-shaped neuroma is responsible for the pain. Over 50 patients, treated locally with Triamcinolon at the time of neuroma resection stayed painfree for over two years. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
