Abstrakt: The article traces the evolution of the term "job enrichment" and specifies the conditions under which it is likely to be a success or a failure. The term was introduced by researcher F. Herzberg in an article describing the pioneering studies at A T&T. Although widely reprinted and quoted, this article was unfortunately more successful in popularizing the term "job enrichment" than in popularizing Herzberg's careful definition. Job enrichment is linked by Herzberg to motivator hygiene theory which postulates that job attitudes consist of two independent dimensions: first, positive feelings of job satisfaction stemming from factors intrinsic to the work itself, such as achievement and advancement, and second, negative feelings of job dissatisfaction stemming from factors extrinsic to the work itself, such as company policy and quality of supervision. Herzberg has consistently rejected the fusion of job enrichment and organizational development techniques, he calls this fusion "the whole catastrophe". His writings have downplayed the importance of the management of the job enrichment effort and the effects of hygiene on it.
