The separation of yttrium and erbium nitrate in 4 M and 3 M HNO and in 3 M HNO/1 M NHNO was studied with variation of input and characterised by the effective values of K and β. The relations of these figures to those from distribution experiments in separatory funnels are discussed. By using 11 M HNO as lower phase yttrium concentrates were made practically free from Tm and Yb, then by use of 4 M HNO Er was separated from them, yielding over 200 g YO of purity better than 99,9%.
