In a cirrhotic patient who presented with cardiogenic pulmonary edema rapidly complicated by severe circulatory shock, magnesium depletion was diagnosed on the basis of a history of heavy alcohol intake, frequent myoclonias and low serum magnesium concentration. Magnesium infusion resulted in a dramatic increase in cardiac work associated with a rapid and definitive resolution of circulatory shock. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
