A linear Stark effect of the R center is observed by studying the R zero-phonon line in X-irradiated LiF crystals in high electric fields. A detailed description of the experimental equipment is given. The Stark effect is investigated under various conditions of field direction, field strength and temperature. The changes of the R zero-phonon line, caused by the electric field, are analysed by means of the method of moments. The results are consistent with the theory for E→A transitions in a center with C-symmetry. By cooling the samples from 4.2 to 1.7 °K the zero-field splitting of the R center ground state was found to be <2 cm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
