Treatment of rats with the anorectic drug chlorphentermine or with the tricyclic antidepressants iprindole, 1-chlor-amitriptyline, clomipramine and imipramine induced cellular lesions in retinal pigment epithelial cells and in retinal ganglion cells. The ultrastructural findings, which are characterized by the formation of numerous membrane-bound cytoplasmic inclusions with crystalloid or lamellar internal patterns, are interpreted as a manifestation of a drug-induced phospholipidosis.
