Abstrakt: Authors emphasize the differences in the estrogen-induced effects on adenoma and carcinomatous tissue, because of errors in cytological interpretation of the effect of estrogen on carcinoma. In adenoma under estrogen therapy there is an increase of polymorphism of the epithelial cells and hyperplasia of the basal cells, with squamous cell metaplasia later. Carcinoma cells themselves never undergo squamous metaplasia. One can see squamous metaplasia on histology and cytology but these changes occur only in the normal epithelial cells which have not yet been infiltrated with carcinoma. This squamous metaplasia should not be mistaken for the changes of degeneration and edema which are seen in carcinoma cells. The efficacy of hormone therapy can only be determined by these typical changes in the nucleus of the carcinoma cells themselves. Because of the minimal trauma of the Franzén aspiration technique we feel this to be the method of choice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
