On the basis of experience on oxalate calculi obtained from 100 patients, the authors characterize the two most frequently occurring oxalate types (calcium oxalate monohydrate=whewellite, and the nonstoichiometric calcium oxalate dihydrate=weddellite), and emphasize the importance in their differentiation. This sharp distinction between the two types is justified on the grounds of the different circumstances in their formation, in their morphological and other properties and in their clinical manifestation.
