The Schiff base derived from 2-aminobenzimidazole and salicylaldehyde has been used to prepare a series of nickel(II) and copper(II) complexes. I.r., electronic spectra, elemental analyses, conductivity measurements and magnetic data have been utilized to determine the nature of these complexes. The results show that the base acts as bidentate ligand through the phenolic oxygen and the azomethine nitrogen in the non-polar form of the ligand or the pyridine-like imine nitrogen of imidazole ring in its zwitterionic form. One of the more striking differences between these compounds and those of other Schiffs bases is the coordination spheres of the metal ions with this particular ligand. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
