Abstrakt: The article discusses Western countries' efforts to improve security relations and arms control in Central Asia. U.S. defense and security cooperation in the region is said to target the defeat of terrorist threats and to develop effective armed forces under civilian control. The role of the North Atlantic Treaty Organizaton (NATO) in security improvement programs in Central Asian nations is addressed. Developments concerning the Manas Airbase and Transit center in Kyrgyzstan are discussed.
