A comparison is made of solid solution and dispersion hardening of welded joints in niobium in alloying with respectively nitrogen and oxygen in the first case and with carbon in the second case. The interstitial elements were added to the weld metal during welding by controlling their content in the shielding atmosphere of argon or helium. The nitrogen and oxygen content in the solid solution of the weld metal was determined by the internal friction method. The calculated flow stress values were compared with experimental data. The concentration of nitrogen and carbon in the weld metal corresponding to the optimum mechanical properties and the welding parameters resulting in this concentration were determined in each case.
