The average level of cardiac output in patients with cor pulmonale has been found to be significantly higher than that encountered in a group of patients with hypertensive and/or atherosclerotic heart disease. Furthermore, a greater proportion of those with cor pulmonale was found to have levels of blood flow in the normal or above normal range than was found in patients with hypertension and/or atherosclerosis. Studies over a period of 22 years, have shown that the cardiac output in patients with cor pulmonale is not as high today as it was during the early years of observation. This change in dynamics has been ascribed to improved management of the underlying pulmonary disease. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
