Eighteen duodenal ulcer patients were treated openly with cimetidine 1g/day. All the ulcers were healed endoscopically in the open period, 14 (77.7%) at 6 weeks and 4 (22.2%) at 12 weeks. They were then entered into a double-blind treatment schedule on cimetidine 1g/day or a placebo. Two (25%) cimetidine-maintenance patients and 8 (80%) placebo patients developed recurrent duodenal ulcers during the later double-blind study (χ=5.4448; p<0.05). Ulcer pain and its severity, epigastric tenderness, and antacid consumption were considerably less in the cimetidine maintenance group. No untoward sideeffects of cimetidine were observed in the trial period. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
