Calcium oxalate crystal growth rate and nucleation rate, as well as total crystal mass, were linearly decreased by addition of sodium pyrophosphate to simulated urine over the range 0.1-0.6 mmol·1. These observations suggest that complexation with free ionic calcium plays a part in the inhibition produced. Pyrophosphate may therefore have a dual mechanism of inhibition: surface active at lower concentrations and complexation at higher concentrations. This latter mechanism may be active after oral orthophosphate therapy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
