To date, oat ( Avena sativa) is the only member of the Gramineae where protoplasts isolated from mesophyll are capable of divisions. A comparison of the events occurring in the first cell cycles between protoplasts isolated from differentiated tissues of grasses and dicotyledoneous plants is thus only possible using this species. The cytological analysis presented here shows that no fundamental differences exist, and that the transition from the differentiated state to a mitotically active cell parallels the events known from dicot protoplasts. Mitotic aberrations observed in oat protoplasts are similar to those known from other species, and cytokinesis is uncoupled from mitosis. Furthermore, the cell plate formation is often faulty. The high frequency of aberrations which are, separately regarded, not unusual, is a probable explanation for the early abortion of oat mesophyll protoplast-derived colonies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
