The presence of arrays of rod-like structures, each with a diameter of about 300 Å and of variable length, is demonstrated in some mitochondria of digitonin-treated Allium sativum root tip cells, and in untreated Leydig cells of the testes and thecal cells of the ovary of the convict cichlid ( Cichlasoma nigrofasciatum). It is suggested that the occurrence of such structures within mitochondria is related to the presence of substances derived from farnesol. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
