Abstrakt: The article discusses selective mutism (SM) in children, an anxiety-based condition wherein children refuse to talk outside the house or if there are people other than family members present. SM is described as developing most commonly in the early school years, with the child being unable to speak because of being paralyzed by intense anxiety. Parents' role in intervening and supporting their child is addressed. SM risk factors and therapeutic options are also discussed.
