The article discusses Shandong kuaishu, a Chinese oral tradition which means fast tales. Particular focus is given to its form as a performance art and the rhetorical strategies used in performance. Shandong fast tales are popular among speakers of northern Mandarin dialects and are indigenous to Shandong Province. The origins, audience composition and narrative pattern of fast tales are tackled. The rhetorical devices being used include onomatopoeia, physical humor and hyperbolic language. |
