Invasive fungal diseases are important causes of mortality and morbidity in patients with hematological malignancies, above all those who underwent allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and those suffering from acute myeloid leukemia. Aspergillus spp. and Candida spp. are reported to be the most frequently responsible fungal agents for this complication; less commonly, infections could be caused by Zygomycetes or other rare molds or yeasts. This review focuses on the management of these invasive fungal diseases in hematological patients, whose prognosis has improved in the last 10 years after the introduction in the clinical use of new antifungal drugs such as liposomal amphotericin B, voriconazole, caspofungin, and posaconazole.
