The article discusses the role of evolutionary theory in the study of the history of childhood. Particular focus is given to the study of childhood in pre-historic times. According to the author, evolutionary theory can bring a multidisciplinary perspective to the field, incorporating data from archaeological and anthropological studies into the body of historical data. It is suggested that evolutionary theory can also help to explain the basic elements of childhood which are common throughout history. Details related to infant and child mortality are presented. Other topics include language learning, adaptation, and parenting. |
