The article focuses on the expedition of the U.S. Coast Survey party at mortar flotilla Sachem in May 1862, under the commandment of Captain D. D. Porter of the U.S. Navy. It says that the Sachem under assistant F. H. Gerdes was commanded by Captain Porter to join the expedition in Pearl River and Lake Pontchartrain, Louisiana, along with five steamers including Clifton, Westfield, and Jackson. It adds that Coast Survey was directed to sound the bar and install buoys in the shallows. |
