The article examines the collective memory and rhetoric of the Nusu elders in Nujiang Prefecture, northwest Yunnan province, China concerning the Cultural Revolution. Particular focus is given to the alleged false memories of the elders regarding the Revolution and the role that speech and memory had in consolidating China's government under ruler Mao Zedong. The author also explores the ways in which the Nusu elders' memories contained strategic omissions, counter-chronological narratives and reinventions of the past regarding the Cultural Revolution. |
