Abstrakt: The article discusses the experiences of Shaker apostates who fled the Shaker community of Pleasant Hill, Kentucky, for Peoria, Illinois, in the 1830s. According to the article, the first Shaker apostate to arrive in Peoria was Charles Ballance in December 1831 following his expulsion from Pleasant Hill. The article discusses why Ballance chose Peoria and his recommendation of Peoria to fellow Shaker apostates. The article discusses what led the Shakers to Pleasant Hill, particularly the Kentucky Revival of the early 19th century, the concept of semi-autonomous Shaker families in Pleasant Hill, and the housing of schoolchildren in the schoolhouse. The article also details the collapse of the concepts of community and cooperation that permeated Pleasant Hill and dissent among several Shakers.
