| Abstrakt: |
The article presents a case study of female genital cutting (FGC) at the Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, Washington. Somali immigrant patients at the hospital requested that physicians perform a form of FGC known as infibulation on their daughters. Physicians responded by offering a substitute practice which would present less medical risk, but withdrew the plan in the face of strong public opposition. Particular focus is given to the role of reified notions of culture in these events. |
