Chickenpox in Taluka Khipro, District Sanghar Sindh.

Abstrakt: Chickenpox, a droplet infection caused by varicella zoster virus, is a highly infectious acute disease having vesicular rash accompanied by fever and malaise. Objectives The objectives of the study were to survey chickenpox disease in rural and poorly developed areas in order to record age, symptoms and seasonal trends in the rural setting. Place of Study Nine union councils of Taluka Khipro, District Sanghar, Sindh Period of Study January 2008 to December 2008. Study Design Cross sectional study Material & methods The information collected from 223 chickenpox cases reported from 9 union councils was recorded on a pre-tested designed questionnaire. Lady health workers and medical officers were trained and involved in the study. Results Highest number of cases reported from UC Kamil Hingoro (n=65) while lowest number from UC Dhilyar (n=7). Majority of the sufferers (67) belonged to 5 to 10 year's age group whereas the lowest incidence (8) was seen in age under 1 year. The leading symptoms were rash, fever and itching. There was no sex predilection for the disease. Most of the children suffering from chickenpox belonged to labourer and farmer families. The rural doctors were competent to diagnose clinically and common symptoms were identified by them. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
