The most common source of conflict in an intensive care unit (ICU) is disagreement about the goals and the results of the treatment. Such conflicts can arise between the ICU staff and the external teams of the hospital that collaborate with the ICU (inter-team), among the staff members working in the ICU (intra-team) and, last but not least, between the ICU team and the family of the patient. In most cases, the first two types of conflict are at the root of the conflict between the ICU team and the family members. Regardless of the type of the conflict, dealing with it effectively is extremely important so as to avoid increased stress and anxiety and to improve the hospitalization and the care of ICU patients.
