BiYO3 photocatalysts were successfully synthesized as nanoparticles by sol-gel technique. The powder obtained after the calcination of the polymeric precursor at 600 °C was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The XRD analysis revealed that the synthesized material has a cubic perovskite (ABO3) structure. The particle size calculated from FWHM was ∼13 nm. TEM analysis confirmed the nanoscale (10-20 nm) nature of the powder. FT-IR and EDX analyses have shown that the calcined powder is phase pure. UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy revealed that the crystalline BiYO3 had a band gap of 2.95 eV. This indicated that BiYO3 might perform well as a photocatalyst in the visible light region. Photocatalytic activity of BiYO3 nanoparticles was investigated for the degradation of methyl orange under visible light irradiation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
